American playwright David Lindsay-Abaire, who won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 2007 for Rabbit Hole, set the stage to be reminiscent of Brooklyn, New York, where he lives. In his works, he frequently develops depictions of the relationships between people living there and their communication problems. In the depiction of human relationships that many American dramatists are trying to depict, I would like to confirm the lineage of ingenuity in the way of communication and reconfirm the characteristics of this David Lindsay-Abaire works. I would like to bring a new perspective to the evaluation of his plays. In his works, people with some form of disability frequently appear, and in addition to the anguish of their own lives, the anguish and struggles of the people surrounding them are also dealt with in detail. It is sometimes described as physical symptoms such as memory impairment, difficulty walking, and speech disorders, and is sometimes described as mental symptoms such as suffering from a sense of loss due to the loss of a child in an accident. People placed in such a harsh situation naturally face difficulties in communicating with each other, but how to overcome these difficulties is directly questioned. I would like to approach the center of the playwright’s world through an analysis of the specific scenes in each play, focusing on the above points.
