Abstract
The aims of this paper are as follows. We will classify and reorganise the usage of the Spanish conjunction ‘y’ in order to contrast with the usage of the Japanese conjunction 'soshite'. Next, we will clarify the norms of use of 'soshite' used by native Japanese speakers. Then, the use of 'soshite' by Japanese language learners of native Spanish speakers will be analysed, and suggestions for Japanese language teaching will be made. Finally, we will explain why the use of 'soshite' is difficult for Japanese language learners and suggest how it can be introduced in Japanese language teaching. In addition, we will argue the conditions under which the Japanese 'soshite' corresponds or does not correspond to the Spanish ‘y’.
