Abstract	Sociology is a discipline that empirically and normatively explores the nature of “commonality” (Seiyama 2011). Therefore, examining the nature of “better commonality” and its feasibility is an important research issue in sociology. Based on this recognition, this paper focuses on “conviviality,” one of the key concepts in exploring better commonality, and reviews the discussions and findings of theoretical and empirical studies. Based on the review of theoretical studies, it became clear that it is important to have an altruistic or prosocial consciousness such that one respects those from diverse backgrounds and wishes for everyone’s well-being, including future generations. Empirical studies on the factors forming such altruistic or prosocial behaviors suggested that socialization during childhood is important. More specifically, it was found that those who grew up seeing neighbors helping others during childhood develop trust and empathy toward others, and those whose mothers participated in religion during childhood are more likely to participate in religion themselves, both leading to volunteer behavior in adulthood. On the other hand, empirical studies on social mechanisms for the formation and maintenance of prosocial behavior indicate that norms, reputation, and networks play an important role. It was also revealed that although prosocial motives such as altruism initially foster cooperation, cooperation cannot last long without these social mechanisms. In sum, to elucidate the essence of better commonality, it is necessary to investigate the factors that develop consciousness of conviviality with others from diverse backgrounds, as well as the social mechanisms that sustain cooperation and prosocial behavior.
