In recent years, psychological support has become more diverse. In addition to psychotherapy in interview rooms, the use of modern media such as the Internet, games, and social networking services has been proven effective in treatment. In this study, we focused on the beneficial psychological effects of familiar media, and its impact on people’s minds and lives. Among the media that are familiar to people, we focused on Anime (Japanese animated works). While identifying the strengths of anime, we considered the significance and potential use of “animation therapy” as proposed by Yokota (2019). Furthermore, we divided animation therapy into three types: animation therapy by watching anime, animation therapy through animation, and animation therapy by producing animation. We also considered the characteristics and usability of each therapy type. However, though anime contributes to people’s mental health when exposed to them on a daily basis, there is little research about animation therapy, and no attempt has been made to apply anime clinically. There is a lack of basic knowledge about anime and the psychology of viewers, including the mechanism of how it affects people’s psychology. Therefore, by accumulating evidence of the impact of anime in providing psychological support, we will be able to build a foundational theory about the psychology of anime and the people who interact with it, which will lead to the systemization of animation therapy and its implementation as psychological support.
