Abstract	La Jeune Sibérienne (1825), a French novel by Xavier de Maistre (1763-1852), was introduced to Japan during the Meiji period. The first complete Japanese translation of the novel, translated by Sueko Nomura, was titled “Siberia no shōjo.” It was serialized in the girls’ magazine Shōjo (Girl) published by Jiji-Shimpo-sha from January to October 1916 and was published in book form by Okura Shoten in December of the same year. This novel is one of the few French full-length novels that were introduced as “shojo shosetsu (girls’ novel)” in girls’ magazines in the early Taisho period. The novel is about Prascovie Lopouloff, a real-life young girl who traveled alone to St. Petersburg to appeal directly to the Czar for her father, who was falsely accused and exiled to Siberia as a political prisoner, and obtained a pardon for him. The study of the history of the reception of this novel about Prascovie Lopouloff in France and Japan revealed that although it is a forgotten work in modern Japan, it was quite popular in France in the 19th and early 20th centuries and was read as a world classic and biography for children in Japan from the 1960s to the 1970s. In Japan, Prascovie’s anecdote was already introduced many times in the latter half of the Meiji period in books, women’s magazines, and girls’ magazines, and in the Taisho period, a complete translation of Maistre’s novel was desired to introduce the tale to more girls, and Nomura’s translation was born. This paper introduces the interesting history of the reception of Prascovie’s anecdote in France and Japan and also examines the aspects of the translation of “Siberia no shōjo,” the first complete translation in Japan, translated by Sueko Nomura, and the image of the girl in it, as well as the educational considerations for young readers.
