Abstract
In 2022, a previously undiscovered copy of Salvator Mundi, a Jesuit mission press publication in Japan, was found in the Utrecht University Library. Until this discovery, the sole known copy resided in the Biblioteca Casanatense, printed in 1598. This paper highlights three key findings derived from the analysis of this newly discovered copy: 1. The Japanese texts in both copies exhibit remarkable similarity, suggesting independent creation in Japan while drawing inspiration from extensively produced European confession guides. 2. While the Casanatense copy employed newly created types in Japan, the Utrecht copy preserves early types predating 1598. However, it incorporates several Chinese character types not encountered in two early printed works around 1591 and 1592. 3. Both copies are compact volumes (Chūhon), featuring Chinese character dictionaries and glossaries of Christian terms at the end. This inclusion facilitates readers’ self-study of Chinese characters and Christian terminology.
