Abstract
The action theories of Talcott Parsons and Alfred Schutz offer an alternative explanation of human behavior to economic theory. Economics explains what actors choose if they have one choice. Meanwhile, Parsons and Schutz explain why actors have no choice. For Parsons, choice is eliminated through morality; for Schutz, choice is limited by habits and meaning structures. Both have similar starting points. Their common background is the methodological discrepancy between microeconomic and macroeconomic schools, and Max Weber’s interpretative sociology as an intermediate position. However, they choose different paths to solve these methodological problems.
