This report discusses items from Osaka University’s entrance questionnaire, which asked students about their writing experience and self-assessment of "writng skills," and reports findings from the results. The questionnaire was collected from 2020 to 2023. First, we found that approximately 30% of the students who enrolled in the university had experienced writing about 2000 words before entering. The majority of opportunities for such writing experience occurred in high school during inquiry-based learning classes. Second, while many had received instruction in high school that writing should consist of an introduction, body, and conclusion, the percentage of students who had received instruction to write in a paragraph structure even in Japanese was low. In addition, the mean score of their self-rated "writing ability" decreased significantly from 2020 to 2022, which might be assumed to be due to the fact that not enough classes were taken due to the impact of COVID-19 pandemic. Furthermore, the most influential factor on this “writing ability” was the presence or absence of writing experience of more than 2000 words.
