Abstract
This paper aims to reexamine D. H. Lawrenceʼs autobiographical novel Sons and Lovers (1913), which the author refers to as ‘the tragedy of thousands of young men in England’, in relation to the tradition of the Bildungsroman and in terms of care. Reconsidering the domestic and social environments depicted in the story and then reinterpreting the protagonist Paulʼs (anti-) development — particularly his loss of youth, his restlessness and his experiences of receiving and giving care —, the paper reevaluates the novel not as a tragedy or a story of the protagonistʼs development into an independent individual, but as a care-full Bildungsroman that emphasizes the importance of mutual interdependence and care among people.
