Abstract	William Shakespeareʼs King John, probably written between 1595 and 1596, describes foreign invasion and uses many economic terms. This would have been induced by the Spanish invasion of England in 1595 and by a financial difficulty both England and Spain faced then. This paper analyses the connection between international politics and economic matters in King John with a special reference to the Anglo-Spanish war. The first section surveys the Spanish invasion and the English reaction to it. The second section examines the way in which international politics in King John revolve around possession. The third section focuses on invasion and profit, and the fourth section analyses contractual human relationships in the play. The final section considers how King John and England deal with private interest and national interest.
