Abstract	Pirates challenge conventional notions of public versus private domains and moral dichotomies. The narrative of a pirate who opposed Alexander the Great in the 19th-century Japan revealed the navy‒piracy relationship, thereby reshaping public perceptions of Japanese pirates as forerunners of imperialism. Unlike British Privateers, this type of piracy lacked official support and sparked discussions about its potential resurgence. The assassination of explorer John Davis by Japanese pirates in 1605, primarily documented in England, was used in Japanese imperial propaganda. Nevertheless, the account elucidating the transformation of pirates into a navy remains elusive. With the conclusion of the Second World War, this incident ultimately became obscured and forgotten.
