Abstract
In this paper, we qualitatively examined the issues of intercultural communication among three technical staff members with different specialties employed at Institute A. As a result, it became evident that technical staff members, particularly those in analysis and measurement, experience challenges in intercultural communication with international students. This difficulty was attributed to the complexity of the structure for handling international students by technical staff compared to administrative staff. Additionally, the transition from laboratory duties to shared administrative tasks was identified as an influencing factor. Through this investigation, it was observed that the frequency of intercultural communication issues could potentially be reduced if faculty members accompany requests, and there is a possibility of intercultural communication challenges arising even among native Japanese speakers. The issues of intercultural communication among technical staff are expected to continue increasing, driven by the growing number of international students and the trend towards shared research facilities and equipment. Consequently, technical staff members grappling with intercultural communication with international students may continue to rise. The insights gained from this paper will be utilized in future quantitative surveys targeting technical staff, aiming to comprehensively understand the situation. Furthermore, this study will contribute to improving intercultural communication training for technical staff, an initiative led by the author as an instructor. By maintaining a cycle of research and practical application, we hope to emphasize the necessity of cultivating the qualifications and capabilities of university staff to support the internationalization of universities.
