Abstract
This paper explores the ways Ali Smithʼs Seasonal Quartet （Autumn, Winter, Spring and Summer） engages with the common, one of the key concepts presented by Michael Hardt and Antonio Negri mainly in their ʻEmpireʼ trilogy （Empire, Multitude and Commonwealth）. Closely examined, Smithʼs novels engage with socio-political challenges —（ network） communication, the production and metamorphosis of subjectivity, immigrants and refugees — and artistic expressions — the symbolism of the bird, collage and bricolage — in a way reminiscent of the common. Through an interconnective reading of the Seasonal Quartet and the ʻEmpireʼ trilogy, the paper shows that Ali Smithʼs literary project to envision the state of being ʻtogetherʼ is deeply resonant with Hardt-Negrian political philosophy on the common.
