Abstract
This paper focuses on some dramatic experiments of the early Shakespeare in King Henry VI Part 1. Shakespeare made use of signs on the stage, such as furniture, sound effects, properties and movement to represent the past history of England. He also utilised the public image, the physique and fame of an Elizabethan star Edward Alleyn, who I argue featured in this play, to characterise the English hero, Talbot. Moreover, the playwright attempted to create the character from the inside and engage the audience as he wrote the tragic end of the hero. My paper concludes that the experiments in this history play lead to the dramaturgy of Shakespeare’s mature plays.
