Abstract	In-situ scanning electron microscopy (SEM) observation of a tensile test was performed to investigate the fracturing behaviour of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) in powder metallurgy Al matrix composites (AMCs). A peeling phenomenon during MWCNT fracturing was clearly observed, and its formation mechanism was examined. During tensile failure, CNT defects having a local weak strength resulted in the axial shift of wall-breaking positions and the following inter-wall sliding. Peeling behavior and resultant morphology of peeled CNT were dependent on structure and distribution of the defects inside CNTs. These results provide new understandings of the fracturing mechanisms of CNT reinforcements for designing high-performance metal matrix composites.
