This paper explores the 21st-century significance of Sebastian Faulks’s 2015 novel Where My Heart Used to Beat by examining the ways in which it deals with the history and memory of the 20th century in relation to the present century. Through a critical analysis of the novel’s description of the 20th century as a ‘century of pathology’ and its strategic use of Tennyson’s In Memoriam in its title, epigraph and story, the paper argues that Where My Heart Used to Beat can be regarded as a 21st-century version of In Memoriam informed by an ironic and（ self-）critical consciousness that alerts the readers of ‘the age of forgetting’ to the danger of their historical amnesia and the necessity of revisiting the previous century in order to rethink and reshape their relation to the present century.
