Abstract
Love in The Two Gentlemen of Verona has been discussed mainly in conjunction with the theme of male friendship. Little attention has been paid to the controversy surrounding passion (a strong emotion) in the sixteenth century. This paper aims to reveal William Shakespeare’s ideas about passion in this romantic comedy referring to the controversy. I argue that Shakespeare opposes both Stoics’ and antitheatricalists’ideas by presenting an alternative view on love as passion. He describes love that moves the audiences to pity, countering the attacks of anti-theatricalists. The dramatist also challenges the Stoic idea by showing a woman’s constant love. Shakespeare thus adds a new dimension to contemporary debates on passion by the representation of love in this play.
