Abstract
A nihilistic view of life has been linked to psychological problems such as alienation and apathy. Previous research suggests that the implicit belief in one's permanence after death and in symbolic immortality presupposes that one's life has "meaning." In addition, adolescents treating death as a direct subject is important in laying the foundation for them to think about life. The present study, therefore, used ＰＡＣ analysis (Personal Attitude Construct Analysis to explore what kind of narratives adolescents form about the signifi cance of what they want to leave behind after death. Six undergraduate and graduate students were interviewed after creating a dendrogram of "things you want to leave behind in society and to your loved ones after you die" as a prompt. Results indicate that they are able to imagine various kinds of "things they would like to leave behind after death," such as "books I wrote," "a better world," and so on. Three participants are described in greater detail as case studies. We suggest that thinking about what adolescents wanted to leave behind after death may help them perceive the fi niteness of life and realize that they should cherish the present moment. We further suggest that the participants may be able to refl ect on their own values and interpersonal relationships when prompted to think about their death. On the other hand, factors that made it diffi cult for them to respond to the prompt were (1) infrequent thinking about what they wanted to leave behind after death, (2) negative infl uences on what they wanted to leave behind after death,(e.g., friends remembering their dead selves and feeling sad) and (3) a lack of foresight about what the future might hold.
