Abstract
This paper explains why the two characteristics of words which precede -suru (する) “do’’, -tyuu (中) “during” and -zumi (済み) “done” are 1) borrowed words and 2) morphologically complex, based on the characteristics of the process of borrowing. Based on data collected from the corpus, we showed that conditions 1) and 2) are indeed valid. Next, we argued that Sino-Japanese words and foreign words have in common that they are newly introduced concepts, and that native compound words are complex concepts. In borrowing, being a new concept and being a complex concept are inevitably linked, and from this we showed that characteristics such as 1) and 2) can be observed. Furthermore, I reviewed studies showing that the verb of a loanword consists of two morphemes not only in Japanese but also in English, and suggested that the conditions 1) and 2) may be true cross-linguistically.
