Abstract	本研究は、同期性を有したCMCメディアであるチャット(chat)について、そのコミュニケーション過程を明らかにすること、特に情報量の変化や参加スタイルとコミュニケーションの展開の関係について心理学的な手法を用いて検討することを目的としている。本稿では、チャット・コミュニケーションの過程を記述し、チャットサービスに対する参加のスタイルを明らかにすることを目的とする探索的研究である。10の観察期間において、商用チャットサービスでの発言を記録し、これらの期間中における発言量の推移を分析した。発言をその方向性によって４つのカテゴリに分類し、このカテゴリ化したデータに基づいてクラスター分析をおこなった。その結果、チャットにはいくつかの参加スタイルがあることが示唆された。最後に、今後の実験的研究に対するいくつかの示唆について論議した。
Abstract	'Chat' is a form of computer-mediated communication (CMC) characterized by near-simultaneous exchanges of text messages. This exploratory study describes the process of chat communication and clarifies the manner in which people participate in chats. We recorded chats that transpired in a commercial chat service during ten observation periods. We then calculated changes in the number of chat messages from one period to the next, classified chat messages into four categories, and performed a cluster analysis according to this categorization. Our analysis revealed that there were several characteristic styles of chat participation, with implications for further empirical study.
